DAMS scores Sochi podium to extend F2 teams’ championship lead

DAMS came second with Nicholas Latifi in the FIA Formula 2 Championship Feature Race at the Sochi Autodrom, followed up with fourth in the Sprint Race, as Sergio Sette Camara took two points finishes to help the team extend its lead in the championship to 53 points ahead of the Abu Dhabi finale.

Nicholas Latifi: “We started the weekend with a good base in practice, we were quickest and felt really strong going into qualifying. The team gave me a car good enough for pole but I made too many mistakes. The front row was still a good place to start from. In the Feature Race we had a brake issue so we lacked a bit of pace but I was happy to hold on to second. It’s a shame to lose the drivers’ championship but full credit to Nyck de Vries, he’s done a great job all year. The goal for the Sprint Race was to score points to consolidate second in the standings but also help the teams’ title bid. We avoided the chaos at the start and got fourth with the fastest lap so I’m pleased. Now our aim is to secure the teams’ title.”

Sergio Sette Camara: “It was not a great weekend for me, I think we could have done more as DAMS had a really strong car. It was difficult to find the ultimate pace in qualifying but I was able to fight from sixth on the grid. We had good pace but it was compromised by the early laps in the Feature Race. Still we climbed back to fifth which was not ideal but decent. I hoped to regain some points in the Sprint Race but the start was hectic, I had to go wide to avoid a car and I received a five-second time penalty. I’ll be aiming for better results in Abu Dhabi.”

The final round of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship will take place at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi on 29 November – 1 December.
